Iconthin CEO Dr. Alvin Cheng Meets with David Piccini at U of T Hatchery to Discuss Advancing Canada’s Microalgae Industry

Our CEO, Dr. Alvin Cheng, met with David Piccini at the University of Toronto Hatchery to discuss strategic pathways for government support to accelerate and advance a sustainable microalgae industry across Canada. The high-level meeting focused on aligning public innovation policies with private biotechnology infrastructure to secure Canada’s position in the global clean-technology and functional ingredients markets.

The U of T Hatchery served as a fitting backdrop for the dialogue, given its role as a premier launchpad for deep-tech ventures transforming complex engineering research into scalable commercial operations. During the discussion, Dr. Cheng outlined how Iconthin’s automated, closed-loop indoor cultivation systems successfully transition microalgae from an unpredictable agricultural crop into a highly standardized, climate-positive industrial input.

A central focus of the meeting was addressing the infrastructure bottlenecks that domestic biotechnology companies face when scaling from pilot facilities to full commercial distribution. Dr. Cheng and Minister Piccini explored how targeted provincial and federal initiatives can lower procurement risks for bio-based startups, incentivize the adoption of clean-label plant molecules by domestic manufacturing sectors, and foster specialized talent pipelines right here in Ontario.

By connecting directly with government leadership at this critical growth juncture, Iconthin is actively advocating for a regulatory and funding ecosystem that recognizes marine biotechnology as a pillar of economic resilience. We remain committed to working alongside public officials to prove that automated biological manufacturing can drive both regional job creation and global environmental sustainability, establishing a traceable, independent supply chain for North American health and nutrition brands.
